Detail Description

1. Abstract

IoT Botnet Detection is an AI-based cybersecurity project designed to identify compromised Internet of Things (IoT) devices that may be controlled by attackers to perform malicious activities. IoT devices often have limited security capabilities, making them vulnerable to botnet infections and coordinated attacks. This project uses machine learning algorithms to analyze network traffic, device communication patterns, packet statistics, and abnormal connection behaviour. The system classifies network activities as normal or potentially malicious and generates alerts when suspicious botnet behaviour is detected. A web-based dashboard displays detection results and network activity statistics. The project aims to improve IoT network security and support early identification of botnet-related threats.

2. Objectives

  1. To develop an AI-based system for detecting IoT botnet activities.
  2. To analyze network traffic generated by IoT devices.
  3. To identify abnormal communication patterns and suspicious connections.
  4. To apply machine learning algorithms for botnet traffic classification.
  5. To detect potentially compromised IoT devices.
  6. To generate alerts for suspicious network behaviour.
  7. To evaluate detection performance using appropriate classification metrics.

3. Existing System

Traditional IoT security systems use firewalls, predefined rules, signature-based intrusion detection, and manual network monitoring to identify malicious activities. These techniques can detect known threats but may struggle with new botnet variants and changing attack patterns.

Disadvantages of the Existing System

  1. Limited detection of previously unknown botnet behaviour.
  2. Dependence on known attack signatures and predefined rules.
  3. Difficulty monitoring large numbers of IoT devices.
  4. High network traffic volumes can complicate manual analysis.
  5. False positives may generate unnecessary alerts.
  6. Limited visibility into evolving botnet communication patterns.

4. Proposed System

The proposed system uses machine learning to analyze IoT network traffic and distinguish normal device communication from suspicious botnet-related activity. It extracts network features and applies a trained classification or anomaly-detection model to identify potentially compromised devices.

Key Features

  1. IoT network traffic analysis.
  2. Data preprocessing and feature extraction.
  3. Machine learning-based botnet classification.
  4. Detection of suspicious communication and traffic patterns.
  5. Identification of potentially compromised devices.
  6. Security alerts and anomaly reports.
  7. Dashboard for visualizing network activity and detection results.
  8. Performance evaluation using precision, recall, F1-score, and false-positive rate.

The system identifies suspicious behaviour for further investigation; a detection result alone does not prove that a device is compromised.

5. Implementation Procedure

  1. Dataset Collection: Obtain a suitable IoT security dataset, such as N-BaIoT or the Bot-IoT dataset, subject to its usage terms.
  2. Data Preprocessing: Handle missing values, remove duplicates where appropriate, and encode or normalize features.
  3. Feature Extraction: Extract features such as packet size, flow duration, packet rate, connection frequency, and traffic volume.
  4. Exploratory Data Analysis: Study normal and botnet traffic patterns and identify class imbalance.
  5. Feature Selection: Select relevant network features to improve model performance and efficiency.
  6. Model Selection: Choose algorithms such as Random Forest, XGBoost, Support Vector Machine, or Isolation Forest.
  7. Model Training: Train the model on representative normal and botnet traffic samples.
  8. Botnet Detection: Classify network records as normal or potentially malicious and identify suspicious traffic patterns.
  9. Dashboard Development: Develop a web application using Flask or Streamlit to display network statistics, classifications, and alerts.
  10. Testing and Evaluation: Test with separate data and evaluate precision, recall, F1-score, detection rate, and false-positive rate.
  11. Deployment: Deploy the application in an authorized test environment and configure logging and alert thresholds.

6. Software Requirements

  1. Programming Language: Python
  2. Machine Learning: Scikit-learn, XGBoost
  3. Data Processing: Pandas, NumPy
  4. Data Visualization: Matplotlib, Plotly
  5. Web Framework: Flask or Streamlit
  6. Network Analysis (optional): Wireshark, Scapy
  7. Development Environment: VS Code or Jupyter Notebook
  8. Operating System: Windows or Linux

7. Hardware Requirements

  1. Processor: Intel Core i5 or equivalent
  2. RAM: Minimum 8 GB; 16 GB recommended
  3. Storage: 10–20 GB of available space, depending on dataset size
  4. GPU: Optional for traditional machine learning models
  5. Network Interface: Required for authorized live network monitoring
  6. IoT Devices: Optional for real-device testing; public datasets can be used without physical IoT hardware

8. Advantages of the Project

  1. Helps detect potentially malicious IoT network activity.
  2. Supports early identification of botnet-related traffic.
  3. Reduces dependence on signature-based detection alone.
  4. Automates network traffic analysis.
  5. Generates alerts for suspicious device behaviour.
  6. Helps security teams monitor multiple IoT devices.
  7. Supports experimentation with different machine learning algorithms.
  8. Can be extended for real-time IoT network monitoring.
