EEG-Based Epileptic Seizure Prediction is an AI-based healthcare project that analyzes Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals to identify patterns that may indicate an increased likelihood of an epileptic seizure. EEG recordings contain electrical activity from the brain and can exhibit changes before, during, and after seizure events. The proposed system preprocesses EEG signals, removes noise, extracts temporal and frequency-domain features, and applies machine learning or deep learning models such as CNN, LSTM, GRU, CNN-LSTM, or Transformer-based architectures. Depending on the dataset and labeling strategy, the system can classify EEG segments into categories such as preictal, interictal, or ictal. The project is intended for research and AI-assisted analysis and should not be treated as a standalone clinical seizure-warning system.
Traditional seizure assessment relies on EEG monitoring and interpretation by neurologists or trained clinical professionals, often together with patient history, symptoms, and other clinical information. Continuous EEG monitoring can generate large volumes of signal data that require expert review.
The proposed system uses machine learning and deep learning to analyze EEG signals and identify patterns associated with seizure risk.
Workflow:
EEG Signal → Noise Removal → Filtering → Segmentation → Feature Extraction → ML/DL Model → Seizure-Risk Prediction → Visualization
Possible models:
Depending on the dataset, the system may classify EEG segments as:
The exact labels and prediction horizon should be defined according to the selected dataset and research objective.
Step 1 – Dataset Collection
Collect labeled EEG recordings from a suitable research dataset containing seizure annotations and, where applicable, preictal/interictal labels.
Step 2 – EEG Signal Preprocessing
Step 3 – Exploratory Data Analysis
Analyze:
Step 4 – Feature Extraction
Extract features such as:
Deep-learning models can also learn features directly from raw or minimally processed EEG signals.
Step 5 – Sequence Preparation
Convert EEG recordings into appropriately labeled temporal windows. For prediction tasks, carefully define the time relationship between an input window and the future seizure event.
Step 6 – Model Development
Develop an ML or deep-learning classifier. CNNs can learn local signal patterns, while LSTM/GRU models can capture temporal dependencies. A CNN-LSTM architecture can combine spatial/local feature extraction with temporal modeling.
Step 7 – Model Training
Train the model using labeled EEG segments and validate it using an appropriate patient-level or recording-level split. Avoid allowing segments from the same patient to unintentionally appear in both training and testing sets.
Step 8 – Model Evaluation
Evaluate using:
For seizure prediction, additional measures can be useful, such as:
Step 9 – Seizure-Risk Prediction
Provide a recent EEG segment to the trained model and generate the predicted class or seizure-risk score according to the project's defined prediction window.
Step 10 – Visualization and Deployment
Develop a Streamlit or Flask application displaying:
