Flood Prediction using Spatiotemporal Networks is an AI-based project designed to predict flood risks by analyzing both spatial and temporal patterns in environmental and geographical data. Flood events are influenced by rainfall, river levels, soil moisture, temperature, elevation, drainage conditions, land cover, and historical flood patterns. Spatiotemporal deep learning models can learn relationships across geographical locations and changes over time to forecast potential flooding. Models such as CNN-LSTM, ConvLSTM, Graph Neural Networks (GNN), and Spatiotemporal Graph Neural Networks (ST-GNN) can be used depending on the dataset and prediction objective. The system can support early-warning systems, disaster management, water-resource planning, and risk assessment.
Traditional flood prediction methods rely on historical records, rainfall measurements, river monitoring stations, hydrological models, weather forecasts, and expert analysis. Statistical models and threshold-based warning systems are also commonly used.
The proposed system uses spatiotemporal deep learning to learn relationships between geographical locations and environmental changes over time.
Workflow:
Environmental & Geospatial Data → Preprocessing → Spatial Feature Extraction → Temporal Sequence Creation → Spatiotemporal Network → Flood Prediction → Risk Visualization
Possible input features include:
Possible models:
The system can produce outputs such as flood/no-flood prediction, flood probability, flood-risk level, or predicted water/flood extent, depending on the dataset.
Step 1 – Dataset Collection
Collect historical flood, rainfall, river-level, weather, geographical, and satellite/geospatial datasets from appropriate sources.
Step 2 – Data Preprocessing
Step 3 – Exploratory Data Analysis
Analyze:
Step 4 – Spatial Feature Preparation
Represent geographical relationships using image grids, spatial matrices, or graph structures. Spatial information can include neighboring regions, river networks, elevation, and land-cover characteristics.
Step 5 – Temporal Sequence Creation
Create sequences from historical observations, such as rainfall and river-level measurements over previous hours or days, to capture temporal dependencies.
Step 6 – Model Development
Develop a suitable spatiotemporal model such as CNN-LSTM, ConvLSTM, GNN, or ST-GNN.
Step 7 – Model Training
Train the model using historical spatial and temporal data. Use appropriate loss functions and validation strategies based on the prediction task.
Step 8 – Model Evaluation
For classification:
For flood-depth or continuous-value prediction:
For flood-area segmentation:
Step 9 – Flood Prediction
Provide recent environmental observations to the trained model and generate flood probability, risk category, predicted water level, or flood extent.
Step 10 – Visualization and Deployment
Develop a dashboard using Streamlit or Flask to display historical conditions, predicted flood risk, maps/heatmaps, charts, and model results.
Note: The prediction output should be treated as an AI-based decision-support result and not as a replacement for official flood warnings or emergency-management systems.
