1. Abstract
Environmental Sound Classification is an AI-based system that automatically identifies and categorizes sounds from the surrounding environment using audio processing, machine learning, and deep learning techniques. The system analyzes audio recordings to recognize sounds such as dog barking, vehicle horns, sirens, rainfall, drilling, footsteps, and human speech. Audio features such as Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs), spectral characteristics, and Mel spectrograms are extracted and processed by a trained classification model. The system predicts the corresponding sound category and displays the result through a user-friendly interface. This project can be applied in smart cities, surveillance systems, environmental monitoring, assistive technologies, and sound event detection.
2. Objectives
- To develop an automated environmental sound classification system.
- To identify and categorize different sounds from audio recordings.
- To extract meaningful acoustic features from sound samples.
- To apply machine learning or deep learning algorithms for sound classification.
- To evaluate model performance using appropriate classification metrics.
- To support real-world applications such as smart surveillance and environmental monitoring.
3. Existing System
Traditional environmental sound identification depends on human listening or manually designed sound detection techniques. These approaches can be time-consuming and may not provide consistent results in noisy environments. Basic sound classification systems often rely on limited acoustic features and may struggle to distinguish between similar sounds or classify recordings containing multiple overlapping sound sources.
Disadvantages of the Existing System
- Manual sound identification requires time and effort.
- Background noise can reduce classification accuracy.
- Similar environmental sounds can be difficult to distinguish.
- Basic systems may struggle with overlapping sound events.
- Limited datasets can affect performance in unfamiliar environments.
4. Proposed System
The proposed system uses machine learning or deep learning to automatically recognize environmental sounds from uploaded audio recordings. The audio is preprocessed, divided into suitable segments when necessary, and converted into features such as MFCCs or Mel spectrograms. These features are supplied to a trained classification model, such as a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), which predicts the sound category. The result is displayed through a simple interface.
Key Features
- Upload environmental audio recordings.
- Preprocess audio and extract acoustic features.
- Classify sounds into predefined categories.
- Display the predicted sound label.
- Show an optional confidence score.
- Support different audio formats, depending on implementation.
- Provide a foundation for real-time sound recognition with suitable microphone integration.
5. Implementation Procedure

- Model Selection: Choose a suitable algorithm, such as Support Vector Machine, Random Forest, CNN, or a pretrained audio classification model.
- Model Training: Train the selected model using the prepared audio features and sound labels.
- Model Evaluation: Evaluate performance using accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and a confusion matrix.
- Application Development: Build an interface using Flask or Streamlit.
- Sound Prediction: Allow users to upload an audio file and display the predicted environmental sound category.
