Detail Description

1. Abstract

Skin Cancer Classification is an AI-based medical image classification project that uses deep learning and computer vision to analyze skin lesion images and classify them into predefined categories. The system preprocesses dermoscopic or clinical skin images, extracts visual features such as color, texture, shape, and lesion patterns, and applies CNN or transfer-learning models for classification. Depending on the selected dataset, classes may include different benign and malignant skin-lesion categories. The system can support medical-image research and preliminary screening assistance, but it is not a replacement for professional dermatological diagnosis.

2. Objectives

  1. To classify skin lesions from medical images.
  2. To apply deep learning and computer vision techniques.
  3. To preprocess and normalize skin-lesion images.
  4. To automatically learn relevant visual features.
  5. To identify patterns related to different lesion classes.
  6. To reduce repetitive manual image-screening effort.
  7. To provide fast AI-assisted image classification.
  8. To develop an easy-to-use skin-image prediction interface.
  9. To evaluate classification performance using medical-image metrics.

3. Existing System

Traditional skin-lesion assessment is performed by dermatologists and trained medical professionals through visual examination, dermoscopy, patient history, and, when necessary, biopsy and laboratory examination.

Disadvantages

  1. Manual examination can be time-consuming.
  2. Large numbers of skin images increase screening workload.
  3. Some lesions can have visually similar characteristics.
  4. Interpretation may vary between observers.
  5. Early or subtle visual patterns can be difficult to assess.
  6. Large image datasets are difficult to analyze manually.

4. Proposed System

The proposed system uses CNN-based deep learning and transfer learning to analyze skin-lesion images and classify them according to the classes available in the selected dataset.

Workflow:

Skin Image → Preprocessing → Normalization → Feature Extraction → CNN/Transfer Learning → Classification → Prediction

Possible models:

  1. CNN
  2. ResNet
  3. VGG
  4. DenseNet
  5. MobileNet
  6. EfficientNet

Possible image features learned by the model include:

  1. Color variations
  2. Lesion shape
  3. Texture
  4. Borders
  5. Pigmentation patterns
  6. Surface characteristics

The final classes should match the selected dataset, such as benign/malignant or multiple lesion categories.

5. Implementation Procedure

Step 1 – Dataset Collection

Collect a labeled skin-lesion image dataset such as a suitable dermoscopic image dataset.

Step 2 – Image Preprocessing

  1. Resize images.
  2. Normalize pixel values.
  3. Convert images into the required format.
  4. Handle unsuitable or corrupted images.
  5. Apply appropriate image augmentation.
  6. Address class imbalance where necessary.

Step 3 – Exploratory Data Analysis

Analyze:

  1. Number of images per class
  2. Image dimensions
  3. Class distribution
  4. Sample lesion images
  5. Pixel and color characteristics

Step 4 – Feature Extraction

Use CNN layers or pretrained architectures to automatically learn visual features from skin-lesion images.

Step 5 – Model Development

Develop a CNN model or use transfer learning with architectures such as ResNet, VGG, DenseNet, MobileNet, or EfficientNet.

Step 6 – Model Training

Train the model using labeled images and validate it using an independent validation dataset.

Step 7 – Model Evaluation

Evaluate using:

  1. Accuracy
  2. Precision
  3. Recall/Sensitivity
  4. Specificity
  5. F1-Score
  6. Confusion Matrix
  7. ROC-AUC

For medical classification, sensitivity and specificity should be considered alongside accuracy.

Step 8 – Prediction

Allow a user to upload a skin-lesion image and generate the predicted dataset class with an appropriate probability/confidence score.

Step 9 – Visualization

Display:

  1. Uploaded skin image
  2. Predicted class
  3. Prediction probability
  4. Confusion matrix
  5. Training/validation accuracy
  6. Training/validation loss
  7. Classification metrics

Step 10 – Deployment

Deploy the trained model using Streamlit or Flask.

6. Software Requirements

  1. Python
  2. VS Code / Jupyter Notebook / Google Colab
  3. NumPy
  4. Pandas
  5. OpenCV
  6. Pillow
  7. Scikit-learn
  8. TensorFlow/Keras or PyTorch
  9. Matplotlib
  10. Seaborn
  11. Streamlit or Flask
  12. Skin-lesion image dataset
  13. Web browser

7. Hardware Requirements

  1. Intel Core i5 or equivalent processor
  2. Minimum 8 GB RAM
  3. 20 GB or more free storage
