Image Super-Resolution using GANs is a Generative AI and computer vision project that improves the resolution and visual quality of low-resolution images using Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). The system learns the relationship between low-resolution and high-resolution images and generates enhanced images with improved details, sharpness, and texture. The Generator reconstructs a high-resolution image from a low-resolution input, while the Discriminator evaluates whether the generated image appears similar to a real high-resolution image. The system can be applied to photography, satellite imagery, medical imaging research, surveillance, digital restoration, and other computer vision applications.
Traditional image upscaling methods increase image dimensions using interpolation techniques such as Nearest Neighbor, Bilinear, and Bicubic interpolation. These methods can enlarge images but generally cannot recover details that were lost during image acquisition or compression.
Conventional image-enhancement techniques may also apply sharpening, denoising, and contrast adjustment, but these approaches have limited ability to reconstruct realistic high-frequency details.
The proposed system uses a GAN-based super-resolution model to reconstruct high-resolution images from low-resolution inputs.
The basic workflow is:
Low-Resolution Image → Preprocessing → Generator → Super-Resolved Image → Discriminator/Evaluation → High-Resolution Output
The GAN consists of two major components:
The Generator receives a low-resolution image and attempts to reconstruct a visually realistic high-resolution version containing improved textures and details.
The Discriminator attempts to distinguish between real high-resolution images and generated super-resolved images.
Possible architectures include:
The system can support different scale factors such as 2×, 4×, or 8×, depending on the selected model and dataset.
Collect paired high-resolution images or an appropriate image dataset.
Suitable datasets may include:
Create low-resolution versions from high-resolution training images using controlled downsampling.
Example:
High-Resolution Image → Downsampling → Low-Resolution Image
Perform:
Build or use a pretrained super-resolution Generator capable of reconstructing high-resolution images from low-resolution inputs.
Build the Discriminator to distinguish real high-resolution images from generated super-resolved images.
Train the Generator and Discriminator using paired low- and high-resolution images.
The Generator attempts to produce realistic high-resolution images, while the Discriminator evaluates their realism.
Depending on the architecture, training may combine:
Evaluate the generated images using:
Upload a low-resolution image and pass it through the trained Generator to produce a super-resolved output.
Develop an interface using Streamlit, Flask, FastAPI, or React.
