Lung Cancer Detection from CT Scans is an AI-based medical image analysis project that uses deep learning and computer vision to identify suspicious patterns in lung CT images. The system preprocesses CT scans, extracts relevant imaging features, and applies CNN-based or 3D deep-learning models to classify images or detect suspicious pulmonary nodules. Depending on the selected dataset, the system can perform normal/abnormal classification, nodule detection, or predefined cancer-related classification. The project is intended for medical-imaging research and AI-assisted screening support, not as a replacement for professional diagnosis.
Traditional lung cancer assessment involves radiologists and medical professionals examining CT scans along with clinical history, symptoms, laboratory information, and other diagnostic investigations. Suspicious findings may require additional imaging or pathological evaluation.
The proposed system uses deep learning and medical-image processing to analyze CT scans and identify patterns associated with the target classes or findings in the selected dataset.
Workflow:
CT Scan → Preprocessing → Lung Region Processing → Feature Extraction → Deep Learning Model → Detection/Classification → Visualization
Possible models include:
Depending on the dataset, the system may perform:
Step 1 – Dataset Collection
Collect a suitable labeled lung CT dataset containing CT scans, nodule annotations, segmentation masks, or target labels.
Step 2 – CT Preprocessing
Step 3 – Exploratory Data Analysis
Analyze:
Step 4 – Lung/Nodule Segmentation
Where required, use segmentation techniques such as U-Net or 3D U-Net to isolate lung regions or suspicious nodules before classification.
Step 5 – Feature Extraction
Deep-learning models automatically learn relevant spatial and volumetric features from CT images. Additional radiomic features can optionally be incorporated where appropriate.
Step 6 – Model Development
Develop a suitable 2D or 3D deep-learning architecture depending on whether individual CT slices or complete CT volumes are being analyzed.
Step 7 – Model Training
Train the model using labeled CT data and validate it using an appropriate independent validation set.
Step 8 – Model Evaluation
For classification:
For nodule detection:
For segmentation:
Step 9 – Prediction
Allow the user to upload a CT image or supported CT volume and generate the appropriate prediction, detection result, or segmentation output.
Step 10 – Visualization and Deployment
Develop a Streamlit or Flask interface to display:
Explainable-AI techniques such as Grad-CAM can optionally be incorporated for image-based classification to visualize regions influencing the model's prediction.
