Detail Description

1. Abstract

Knowledge Graph Construction is an Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language Processing (NLP) project designed to extract entities and relationships from unstructured text and represent them as a structured graph. The system identifies entities such as people, organizations, locations, and concepts, then establishes meaningful relationships between them. These entities are represented as nodes, while their relationships are represented as edges. Using NLP, Named Entity Recognition (NER), and relation extraction techniques, the system transforms textual information into an interconnected knowledge structure. This project supports knowledge discovery, semantic search, question answering, and intelligent information retrieval.

2. Objectives

  1. Extract meaningful entities from unstructured text.
  2. Identify relationships between entities.
  3. Represent information as nodes and edges in a graph.
  4. Apply NLP and information extraction techniques.
  5. Enable visualization and exploration of connected knowledge.
  6. Support semantic search and knowledge discovery.

3. Existing System

Traditional information management systems store data in documents, tables, and databases. Although these systems organize information, identifying complex relationships between entities across multiple documents can require additional processing and manual analysis.

Disadvantages

  1. Relationships between information items may be difficult to explore.
  2. Unstructured documents are challenging to analyze at scale.
  3. Traditional databases may require complex queries to discover connections.
  4. Manual knowledge organization is time-consuming.
  5. Contextual relationships may remain hidden in textual data.

4. Proposed System

The proposed system uses NLP and graph technologies to construct a knowledge graph from text documents. It extracts entities using NER, identifies relationships through rule-based methods or trained relation extraction models, and converts the results into subject–predicate–object triples. These triples are used to create graph nodes and edges. The graph can be stored in a graph database or an in-memory graph structure and visualized through an interactive interface. Users can explore entities, inspect their relationships, and discover connections within the collected information.

5. Implementation Procedure

  1. Data Collection: Collect text from documents, articles, reports, or other suitable sources.
  2. Text Preprocessing: Clean the text and divide it into sentences.
  3. Entity Extraction: Identify entities using spaCy, NLTK-based methods, or transformer models.
  4. Relationship Extraction: Detect relationships between entities using patterns, dependency parsing, or relation extraction models.
  5. Triple Generation: Represent relationships as subject–predicate–object triples.
  6. Graph Construction: Convert extracted entities into nodes and relationships into edges.
  7. Graph Storage: Store the graph using NetworkX, Neo4j, or another suitable graph database.
  8. Graph Visualization: Display the knowledge graph using PyVis, Plotly, or an appropriate visualization library.
  9. Testing and Evaluation: Evaluate entity recognition, relationship extraction, duplicate handling, and graph accuracy.

6. Software Requirements

  1. Programming Language: Python
  2. Libraries: Pandas, NumPy, NetworkX
  3. NLP Tools: spaCy, NLTK, or Hugging Face Transformers
  4. Graph Database: Neo4j (optional)
  5. Visualization Tools: PyVis or Plotly
  6. Web Framework: Streamlit or Flask
  7. Development Environment: VS Code, PyCharm, or Jupyter Notebook
  8. Operating System: Windows, Linux, or macOS

7. Hardware Requirements

  1. Processor: Intel Core i3 or equivalent and above
  2. RAM: Minimum 4 GB; 8 GB recommended
  3. Storage: At least 5 GB of available space
  4. Internet Connection: Required for downloading pretrained models or accessing online resources
  5. GPU: Optional for basic graph construction; beneficial for larger transformer models

8. Advantages of the Project

  1. Converts unstructured text into connected, structured knowledge.
  2. Reveals relationships between people, organizations, locations, and concepts.
  3. Supports semantic search and intelligent question answering.
  4. Makes information easier to visualize and explore.
  5. Helps discover indirect connections between entities.
  6. Can be applied to healthcare research, education, finance, and business intelligence.
  7. Provides practical experience with NLP, graph databases, and knowledge representation.
