ML-Based Insurance Fraud Detection is a machine learning project designed to identify potentially fraudulent insurance claims by analyzing historical claim records and customer information. Traditional insurance fraud detection methods often rely on manual investigation and predefined rules, which may be time-consuming and may fail to identify complex fraud patterns. The proposed system uses machine learning algorithms such as Logistic Regression, Decision Tree, Random Forest, and XGBoost to classify insurance claims as potentially fraudulent or legitimate. The system analyzes features such as claim amount, policy details, incident type, customer history, vehicle or property information, and claim frequency, depending on the dataset. Data preprocessing, feature engineering, and model evaluation are performed to improve prediction quality. An interactive dashboard displays fraud risk predictions, claim details, and relevant visualizations to support insurance investigators. The system aims to reduce manual screening efforts, improve fraud detection efficiency, and support faster, data-driven insurance claim assessments.
Traditional insurance fraud detection systems primarily use manual claim verification, predefined business rules, customer records, and investigator expertise to identify suspicious claims.
The proposed system uses machine learning techniques to analyze insurance claims and estimate the likelihood that a claim may be fraudulent.
The process begins with collecting historical insurance claim data, followed by data cleaning, missing-value handling, categorical encoding, and feature selection. Multiple classification algorithms are trained and evaluated to select a suitable model. The selected model predicts a fraud risk score or classifies a claim as potentially fraudulent or likely legitimate. A web-based dashboard presents prediction results, claim information, risk indicators, and analytical charts.
The system can also incorporate explainability techniques to show which claim characteristics contributed to a prediction. Flagged claims are sent for human investigation rather than being automatically rejected, helping reduce the risk of unfair decisions based on model errors.
