Detail Description

1. Abstract

Stroke Risk Prediction is a machine learning-based healthcare application designed to predict the potential risk of stroke using important demographic, lifestyle, and health-related parameters. The system analyzes factors such as age, gender, hypertension, heart disease, average glucose level, BMI, smoking status, and other relevant patient information. A machine learning classification model is trained using a stroke dataset to identify patterns associated with stroke occurrence. After entering the required patient details, the system processes the information and generates a predicted stroke-risk result. The proposed system can support early risk awareness and encourage timely medical consultation and preventive healthcare. It is intended as a risk-prediction and decision-support tool, not a replacement for professional medical diagnosis.

2. Objectives

  1. To develop a machine learning system for predicting potential stroke risk.
  2. To analyze demographic, lifestyle, and clinical factors associated with stroke.
  3. To preprocess and prepare stroke-related data for machine learning.
  4. To train and evaluate suitable classification algorithms.
  5. To provide a simple interface for entering patient information.
  6. To generate an understandable stroke-risk prediction.
  7. To support early awareness of potential stroke risk factors.
  8. To evaluate the prediction model using suitable performance metrics.

3. Existing System

In the existing system, stroke-risk assessment is generally performed by healthcare professionals based on medical history, physical examination, clinical measurements, and diagnostic investigations. Doctors consider factors such as age, blood pressure, glucose levels, heart disease, BMI, smoking status, and other health conditions.

Limitations

  1. Requires professional medical consultation.
  2. Manual analysis of multiple risk factors can be time-consuming.
  3. Large healthcare datasets are difficult to analyze manually.
  4. Early risk assessment may not always be easily accessible.
  5. Traditional approaches do not automatically learn patterns from historical datasets.

4. Proposed System

The proposed Stroke Risk Prediction System uses machine learning classification techniques to estimate potential stroke risk based on selected patient parameters. The dataset is preprocessed by handling missing values, removing inconsistencies, encoding categorical variables, and scaling numerical features when required.

Algorithms such as Logistic Regression, Decision Tree, Random Forest, Support Vector Machine (SVM), and K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) can be trained and evaluated. The models can be compared using accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, confusion matrix, and ROC-AUC.

The selected model is integrated into a user-friendly application where users can enter relevant health information. The system processes the input through the trained preprocessing pipeline and generates a stroke-risk prediction.

5. Implementation Procedure

  1. Dataset Collection – Collect a suitable stroke dataset containing patient health parameters and a target stroke label.
  2. Data Preprocessing – Handle missing values, duplicates, inconsistent records, and categorical variables.
  3. Exploratory Data Analysis – Analyze relationships between age, glucose level, hypertension, heart disease, BMI, smoking status, and stroke outcome.
  4. Feature Selection – Select relevant demographic, lifestyle, and clinical features.
  5. Dataset Splitting – Divide the dataset into training and testing sets, such as 80% training and 20% testing.
  6. Model Training – Train multiple machine learning classification algorithms.
  7. Model Evaluation – Evaluate models using accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, confusion matrix, and ROC-AUC.
  8. Model Selection – Select a suitable model based on overall performance.
  9. Application Development – Develop the interface using Streamlit or Flask.
  10. Prediction – Process user input through the trained model and generate the risk result.
  11. Testing – Test the application using different valid patient records.
  12. Deployment – Deploy the application locally or on a suitable cloud platform.
